Cafe 252

Cafe 252 is a community cafe at 252 Maitland Road, Mayfield, run as part of the Grainery Care charity with a pay-it-forward coffee system and a community pantry alongside. It is a warm, unpretentious local spot, and the footpath tables out front take dogs on the standard NSW terms: pets stay outside food premises.

Plan on the front footpath tables, which is where dogs belong under the NSW Food Authority rules that keep animals off indoor dining areas. The cafe is relaxed about dogs at the street seating and water bowls have been left out for passing pups, though the setup is not purpose-built for them, so carrying your own bowl is a safe habit.

Worth knowing

This is a social-impact cafe rather than a foodie destination: the pay-it-forward board lets customers pre-purchase coffees and meals for locals doing it tough, and the adjoining Grainery Care hub supports the community midweek. The menu covers barista coffee, thickshakes, toasties, pies, house hamburgers and homemade banana cake, with vegetarian and vegan options. Hours run Monday and Saturday from 7am to midday and Tuesday to Friday from 7:30am to 2pm, closed Sundays.

Getting there and parking

It sits on Maitland Road, the main Mayfield strip, with free street parking out front and easier parking on the residential side streets. Buses run along Maitland Road if you are arriving without a car.

Close by with the dogs

Purdue Park in the nearby streets works for a short walk before or after coffee, and Islington Dog Off-Leash Area a few minutes south is the bigger draw, with open grass, shade and a creek edge for a paddle.
