Islington Dog Off-Leash Area

Islington Dog Off-Leash Area, also signed as Islington Park, is a large open-space park in Tighes Hill on Newcastle's waterfront fringe, with grassy fields, mature shade trees and direct access to Throsby Creek. Off-leash runs from sunrise to sunset, and the creek swim is the reason regulars keep coming back, though the boundary is not fully fenced, so recall matters here.

The dog setup

The park offers wide grassy expanses, a small agility course with pipes, bars and ramps for training, shaded seating for owners and public restrooms. Water taps are on site, though carrying your own bowl saves queuing. Poo bags are supplied, with bring-your-own as a sensible backup.

City of Newcastle leash-free rules apply: dogs under effective control at all times with a leash carried, dangerous and restricted dogs prohibited, and no dogs within 10 metres of playground equipment. Any dog showing aggression should be leashed and removed immediately. The park is not securely fenced throughout, with gaps between the open space, the car park and nearby roads, and the creek edge itself is unfenced, so watch the boundary line rather than assuming enclosure.

The vibe

This is a genuinely social park with a friendly regular crowd. Late afternoons between 4pm and 6pm and weekend mornings draw the biggest gatherings, suiting confident dogs. If yours is nervous around others, a weekday midday visit avoids the after-work rush. The creek access is tidal, so swimming is cleanest and deepest around high tide.

Getting there and parking

The park sits at 2 Park Road, Tighes Hill, off Maitland Road, with a free on-site car park. Bus stops along Maitland Road are within walking distance, and the Throsby Creek walking path network connects straight into the park, so you can arrive on foot or by bike path as easily as by car.

Close by with the dogs

Pingado on Maitland Road in Islington is proudly dog friendly, and Bar Sole does wood-fired pizza with dogs welcome outside. For a longer outing, the Throsby Creek Foreshore to Newcastle Beach walk starts on the same waterway, and the Old Shoreline Park fenced dog park at Hamilton is the pick if you need a fully enclosed run.
