The Pocket Mayfield

The Pocket sits right on Maitland Road, the main strip through Mayfield, and it is the kind of neighbourhood brunch spot where dogs wait patiently at the front tables while their owners queue for coffee. It works best as a coffee-and-a-pastry stop rather than a long sit-down lunch with the dog in tow.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the front footpath tables, which face the street and give a dog plenty to watch. Under NSW food-premises rules pet dogs stay outside, so plan on the street-facing seating and pick your table with shade in mind. Staff are welcoming rather than kitted out for dogs, so bring your own water bowl.

The menu

Formerly Side Pocket Espresso, the cafe kept its reputation for solid coffee and added a wider brunch kitchen. Regulars rate the chai, the banana bread, flaky croissants and stacked toasties, and there are vegan options alongside. It opens early, 6am to 2pm every day except Sunday, and the footpath tables fill fast on weekends, so the early shift gets the good seats.

Getting there and parking

Metered and time-limited street parking runs along Maitland Road out front, and you will usually find easier spots a short walk away on the residential side streets such as Hanbury or Dora Street. Buses run along Maitland Road if you would rather skip the parking hunt altogether.

Close by with the dogs

Onyx Espresso Bar a few doors along has a proper dog-friendly back courtyard if you want a longer stay, and Purdue Park is a small leash-free reserve a short walk into the residential streets for a quick run before or after coffee. Ground Up Espresso in Carrington is another walkable dog-friendly option towards the harbour.
