Jesmond Bushland Loop

The Jesmond Bushland Loop, sometimes listed as Jesmond Park Loop, threads through a pocket of remnant bushland in the suburb of Jesmond in Newcastle. Dogs walk it on lead, and it pairs a leafy bush track with the lawns and rose gardens of Jesmond Park.

Lead rules

City of Newcastle requires dogs on a lead at all times in its bushland and standard public reserves. The bush here shelters wildlife such as squirrel gliders, which is part of why the rule applies.

The walk

Surfaces are mixed, with sealed concrete paths and natural dirt tracks branching into the bush. Expect tall trees, native ferns and a good variety of local plants.

Construction on the nearby Newcastle Inner City Bypass has caused detours and temporary closures on some local tracks, so follow any signs on the day.

Max: Where the sealed path turns to dirt, keep the lead short. The bush edges are glider habitat, not a sniffing free-for-all.

Getting started

Free parking is available on site and in the street off Robinson Avenue. Public toilets and bins are in the main park grounds, but carry a bowl and water for the dog.

Mature trees shade the lawns and paths, which keeps the park side comfortable on warm days.

When to go

The open lawns and picnic areas draw local families, so pick a quieter hour if your dog is easily distracted. It suits dogs that enjoy a sniff-heavy bush walk on lead.
