S.L Butler Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

S.L Butler Reserve is a long, fully fenced neighbourhood off-leash park in a residential pocket of Mornington at 68 Herbert Street, open around the clock. The drawcard is the shape: a flat grass runway roughly 125 by 45 metres that suits sprinting and fetch far better than a square suburban paddock.

The dog setup

The fence line runs down both long sides and across the Herbert Street end, with the secure double-gated entry at the Lucerne Avenue end. Off-leash applies 24 hours a day inside the enclosure, under effective voice or hand control. The fencing stops short of the eastern playground near Lucerne Avenue, which is an on-leash zone, so leash up before crossing into it. Bins sit at both ends of the reserve, and Mornington Peninsula Shire rules against aggressive or pushy dogs apply as anywhere on the Peninsula.

Max: use the Lucerne Avenue double gates, not the far end. The Herbert Street closure is solid but the gate is the safe way in with other dogs already running.

Worth knowing

The seating table is unshaded, though mature trees along the fencelines cast natural shade for most of the day. Water comes from a tap in the adjacent playground area, where a metal pan is sometimes left out; bring a bowl to be certain. Sunday mornings and evenings are the quiet windows, while weekday afternoons draw the regular fetch sessions, and the runway is at its best when there is room to throw.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits between Herbert Street and Lucerne Avenue, best reached by car or a short walk in from Mornington-Tyabb Road. Free street parking runs along both sides.

Close by with the dogs

Civic Reserve Fenced Dog Park and Pine Avenue Reserve are the other main fenced runs in town, and Royal Beach on the Esplanade pairs a grass run with sand and water.
