Irene Street DogPark

Irene Street DogPark is a spacious off-leash reserve on the floodplain in Mooroobool, next door to Earlville, where open grassy fields run down to a shallow creek that dogs wade through on warm days. It is the local go-to for a proper run rather than a quick footpath stop, and the creek is the reason many dogs refuse to leave.

The dog setup

Under Cairns Regional Council rules, dogs may run off-leash within the designated area provided they stay under effective voice control. The space is largely an open floodplain parkland rather than a fenced compound, so reliable recall matters, especially with roads and houses bordering parts of the reserve. Pick up after your dog immediately, council officers do patrol and fine, regulated or declared dangerous dogs are not permitted, and dogs should be kept clear of nearby playgrounds and sports fields.

The vibe

Scattered trees provide decent shade and a handful of benches sit around the edges, though seating is limited on busy afternoons. Weekday afternoons and weekend mornings draw the biggest crowds of regulars. If your dog is small or timid, a mid-morning weekday visit is the calmer window. Bring your own drinking water and waste bags as backup to the council bins, and treat the creek as untreated water that runs high and murky after rain.

Worth knowing

Creek-side off-leash parks around Cairns have had crocodile warning signs erected after sightings, so keep your dog out of deep or flooded water and stick to the shallow riffles. It is a tropical park: check for ticks after the visit and go early or late in the build-up, when the heat is kinder.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits in the block bounded roughly by Langan, Irene and Carnation Drive, an easy drive from Cairns city via Mulgrave Road or Reservoir Road. Parking is on-street along Irene Street and Carnation Drive, and it tightens up at peak times, so arrive early if you want a spot close to the gate. Bus stops on Irene Street work too.
