Newell Street Cafe

Newell Street Cafe is a small, cosy espresso bar at 176 Newell Street in Bungalow's industrial-residential pocket, a few minutes from the Cairns CBD. It doubles as the home bar for Tattooed Sailor Coffee Roasters, so the beans are roasted on site and you can usually smell it before you see the counter. Dogs are welcome at the casual outdoor tables.

The dog setup

The outdoor seating is simple and unfussy, which suits a leashed dog settled beside your seat while you drink. Check with staff on the day for water and treats, since availability is not guaranteed at a bench this size. It is a quick in-and-out kind of place rather than a lingering brunch stop.

The vibe

House-roasted Tattooed Sailor coffee is the whole point, poured alongside toasties, cheesecake and other sweet treats, and a solid run of vegetarian and vegan options for such a small menu. Hours are Monday to Friday from 6am to 1pm and Saturday from 7am to 12:30pm, closed Sundays, so it is a weekday-morning habit for most locals.

Getting there and parking

Newell Street runs parallel to the railway line in Bungalow, with free street parking out front plus a small lot. Coming from the CBD it is a short drive south across the 5 Ways area.

Close by with the dogs

For off-lead time before or after coffee, the Little Barlow Park Fenced Dog Park is in the same suburb, and the Cairns Esplanade is on-lead only but an easy add-on for a proper morning walk. If the cafe crawl continues, Blackbird Warehouse and COFFii Espresso are both Bungalow stops that welcome dogs.
