Belmont Bush Reserve is a small pocket of native bushland tucked into a residential street in Montmorency, with unsealed trails through Valley Grassy Forest. It is an on-leash walking spot rather than an off-leash run, good for a quiet sniff around rather than a big fetch session.

Rules: Dogs must stay on leash throughout the reserve. It protects native flora and fauna, including orchids in places, so keep dogs on the formed track and out of any marked conservation patches. Bring your own poop bags, as none are provided.

What's there: Facilities are minimal. There are no toilets, taps or bins on site, and the terrain is natural dirt track with a steeper section near the top ridge that can get slippery after rain. Bring water for your dog.

Getting there: The reserve is on Belmont Crescent, Montmorency, with on-street parking nearby. Montmorency Station on the Hurstbridge line is about a 10 to 15 minute walk away.

Nearby with the dogs: Montmorency's small village strip has a few dog-friendly cafes with outdoor seating if you want a coffee after the walk. If you're after an off-leash run instead, Montmorency Park on Para Road and E J Andrew Reserve in nearby Briar Hill are better options.

Check for ticks after a walk here. It's genuine bushland, not a mown park, so they're a real possibility.

Go early morning or late afternoon on weekdays for a quiet walk. Good for on-leash dogs who enjoy a bush sniffari over an open-field run.
