Redleap Recreation Reserve Dog Off-Leash Area

Redleap Recreation Reserve's off-leash area sits west of Peter Hopper Lake in Mill Park, inside a 6.2-hectare reserve with a lake, walking tracks, playgrounds and an oval. The dog zone itself is fenced, with a separate quieter space for smaller or timid dogs, and the northern car park puts you a short walk from the gate.

The dog setup

City of Whittlesea rules apply: your dog must be under effective control, meaning it returns immediately on command, and must not bother, threaten or approach other people or animals. Carry bags and use the bins. The off-leash allowance applies only inside the bounded dog area.

Everywhere else in the reserve, including the paths and the Peter Hopper Lake edge, is on-lead territory. The lake is a wildlife zone, and the council expects owners to manage that boundary themselves. A drinking fountain inside the off-leash area saves you carrying water, and a bridge over a dry creek bed links the car park to the dog zone.

Max: the leash rule flips at the lake edge, so clip back on before you get near the water. It is as much about the ducks as it is about your dog.

Worth knowing

The wider reserve gives you options beyond the run: public toilets, barbecue and picnic facilities, and shaded, well-maintained paths for an on-lead lap of the lake. Dogs stay off the oval when organised sport is on. The reserve is open around the clock, though daylight hours are when you will meet the regulars.

Getting there

The main car park is at the northern end off Redleap Avenue in Mill Park. From there you cross the bridge over the dry creek bed into the off-leash zone. Buses run along nearby Centenary Drive and Plenty Road, but check Public Transport Victoria for current routes before relying on them.

Close by with the dogs

The Mill Park Village shopping strip on Centenary Drive has cafes with outdoor seating, including Modo Mia, for the post-park coffee. If you want more fenced space, Bundoora Park's fenced dog park and Delacombe Reserve's fenced dog park in South Morang are both nearby.
