Legana Off-Lead Dog Park (Tanner Drive)

The Legana Off-Lead Dog Park on Tanner Drive is a fully fenced, double-gated paddock run by West Tamar Council, a short hop off the West Tamar Highway with a view over the Tamar River thrown in. For a suburb of Legana's size it covers the essentials well: secure fencing, bags, bins and a bench.

Leash status

Off-lead applies strictly inside the fenced zone. Dogs must stay under effective control, meaning they respond to a call and remain in sight, even within the paddock. The entry uses a two-gate airlock; close the first gate fully before opening the second, both coming in and leaving. Step outside the enclosure onto the general reserve or the riverside tracks and the lead goes straight back on.

Max: two-gate systems only work if both doors actually get closed. Check it behind you before anyone unclips.

Water and terrain

The enclosure is a grassed paddock, flat and open enough for a proper run or ball session. It turns to mud after heavy rain, so a towel in the car earns its place in winter. There is no plumbed water inside the fence, so carry your own. A bag dispenser and rubbish bin sit at the park, and a bench lets owners sit through a long game of fetch.

Getting there and parking

Tanner Drive is an easy turn off the West Tamar Highway (A7), with street parking right at the entry. A small playground with two swings sits just outside the dog area, and Woolworths Legana is walkable if you need supplies on the way home.

Worth knowing

The adjacent riverbank is tidal; keep dogs leashed along it and watch for nesting birds around high tide. The playground outside the fence means families pass through the reserve, so a dog that rushes at strangers or children is a poor fit here. It is a compact park, best for one or two well-socialised dogs at a time.

When to go

Weekday late afternoons between 4pm and 6pm and weekend mornings draw the local regulars. For the paddock to yourselves, aim for a weekday mid-morning.
