The Tanner Drive off-lead area gives Legana dogs a fenced, double-gated paddock just off the West Tamar Highway, with a view over the Tamar River thrown in for free.

The rules. Dogs must be under effective control at all times, meaning they respond to a call and stay in sight. The fenced zone is the off-lead section; step outside its double gates and it is lead-on again, especially near the river walk.

What's there. A grassed, fully fenced paddock with a double-gated entry, a waste bag dispenser, bins, a park bench and a small playground with two swings just outside the dog area.

Getting there. It sits on Tanner Drive, an easy turn off the West Tamar Highway (A7), with street parking right at the entry. Woolworths Legana is a short walk away if you need supplies before or after.

Watch-outs. The ground turns to mud after heavy rain, so a towel in the car is worth it. The adjacent riverbank is tidal; keep dogs leashed there and watch for nesting birds at high tide.

Check the double gate is shut behind you before letting anyone off lead. Two-gate systems only work if both doors get closed properly.

Nearby with the dogs. Cafe Romero, a few minutes away in Legana, has undercover outdoor seating that welcomes dogs after a run.

When to go. Weekday late afternoons (4-6pm) and weekend mornings draw the local crowd. For a quiet paddock to yourselves, aim for a weekday mid-morning.
