The short version. Foley Reserve is a compact off-leash area in Kew, off Adeney Avenue near the Kew Recreation Centre, managed by the City of Boroondara. It is a neighbourhood-scale patch of grass with mature trees rather than a sprawling park, which makes it a good fit for a quick run or a less overwhelming outing.

The rules. Dogs may be off-leash within the designated area but must be under effective voice control, and you need to carry a lead at all times. Standard Boroondara conditions apply: pick up after your dog, keep clear of any playground and picnic or barbecue zones, and note that dogs declared dangerous or restricted must stay leashed and muzzled. Check the on-site signage for the exact boundary before letting your dog off.

What's there. Expect bins and bench seating, with mature trees giving natural shade over summer. Facilities are modest, in keeping with the size of the reserve, so bring your own water on warm days.

Getting there. The reserve sits on Adeney Avenue, Kew, with street parking nearby that can fill at peak times; side streets are the fallback. The 109 tram along High Street and Cotham Road puts you within walking distance if you would rather not drive.

Nearby with the dog. Kew's Willsmere Road cafe strip, including dog-friendly spots, is an easy add-on for coffee after a run.

When to go. Weekday mid-morning and early afternoon are the quietest windows. Weekday mornings before work, school pickup and weekend mornings are the busiest, so time it accordingly if your dog is on the nervous side.
