Barry's Garage

The short version. Barry's Garage is a converted mechanic's workshop on Burke Road at the Kew and Deepdene border, running as a sandwich bar by day and a wine and sandwich spot into the evening. It carries an industrial, casual feel that lends itself to bringing a dog along.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome, with footpath seating out front the easy option and the open, garage-style interior more relaxed than most. It packs out on weekends, so if you plan to linger, bring a lead and a small mat and grab a spot before the lunch rush. Confirm a water bowl on arrival rather than assuming one.

Good to know. The reputation rests on substantial sandwiches, calzones and a Reuben among the favourites, solid coffee in the morning and a decent wine list later. There is a good range of vegan and vegetarian options too.

Nearby with the dog. The Anniversary Trail shared path sits a couple of kilometres south for a proper walk to pair with lunch.

When to go. Weekday lunch or mid-afternoon is the calmest stretch. Weekend middays are the busiest and the footpath tables fill fast.
