Gordon Barnard Reserve Fenced Dog Play Area

The fenced dog play area at Gordon Barnard Reserve is a purpose-built, fully enclosed off-leash park in Balwyn North, run by the City of Boroondara between the eastern sports oval and the Boroondara Sports Complex. The secure double-gate entry is the reason to come here: it is one of the safer choices in the area for a dog with unreliable recall or a shy dog that needs a calmer space.

The rules

Off-leash applies inside the fenced area during daylight hours, and dogs stay on lead until you are safely through the gate. Council fenced-park rules cap it at 2 dogs per person, require holes your dog digs to be filled in, ban human food inside the enclosure, and ask you to closely supervise any children with you.

Keep dogs off the adjacent sporting ovals during organised sport, and carry bags; bins are provided. The park closes Thursdays from 7am to 8:30am for maintenance. One local quirk: a large oak tree drops acorns, which are toxic to dogs, so watch what yours picks up in autumn.

What's there

The ground mixes grass with a sand pit for digging and sensory zones of logs and rocks. Water fountains have built-in dog bowls, benches sit inside the fence, and a separate quiet patch is set aside for small or shy dogs. Public toilets are available in the wider reserve.

Max: use the small-dog patch as a decompression zone. If the main pen is rowdy, a nervous dog does better watching from behind the divider before joining in.

Getting there

The reserve is at 230 Balwyn Road, Balwyn North, with free parking available off both Belmore Road and Balwyn Road, including accessible parking and entrances. It is roughly 1.8km from the nearest tram, so driving is the easier option.

Close by with the dogs

If the fence queue is long, the Macleay Park Dog Off Leash Area on Belmore Road offers open off-lead grass nearby, and Hislop Park Dog Off Leash Area is another neighbourhood option. Cafes along Balwyn Road and Whitehorse Road generally suit a leashed dog outside; check each venue's current policy.

When to go

Quietest on weekday afternoons and Sunday evenings; Saturday afternoons are the busiest. This suits small dogs, shy dogs, and anyone who wants a secure fence between their dog and the road.
