What visitors mention
Mont Albert Reserve Dog Off Leash Area is a fenced sports oval on Melrose Street that doubles as an off-leash park, open 24 hours a day whenever organised sport isn't using the ground. It's a solid pick for a dog that needs a proper sprint rather than a gentle stroll.
The rules. Off-leash is allowed around the clock outside of scheduled sport, but your dog needs to be under effective voice or hand control and come back on command. Carry a lead under 1.5 metres at all times so you can restrain your dog if needed, and keep at least 2.5 metres clear of playgrounds, barbecues and picnicking families. Dogs are not permitted on the field during active training or matches, and chasing or threatening other people or animals isn't tolerated, per Whitehorse City Council's rules for dogs in public spaces.
What's there. A drinking fountain, waste bins, a few benches, public toilets and a children's playground are all on site, plus an approximate 840-metre path around the perimeter that's good for a warm-up lap before letting your dog off lead.
Getting there. Street parking along Melrose Street, with multiple access points from the surrounding residential streets. Local buses service the area.
Watch-outs. The oval turf can turn boggy after heavy rain or through winter, so expect muddy paws. Fencing runs the perimeter but gates are often left open, so don't rely on it to contain a dog that isn't reliably recall-trained.

Nearby with the dogs. Dog-friendly cafes are scattered through Mont Albert and nearby Box Hill, and pet-friendly accommodation is a 10-15 minute drive away around Box Hill, Camberwell and Canterbury.
Weekday mornings and evenings from 5 to 7pm plus Saturday mornings are the social peak, great if your dog likes company, overwhelming if it doesn't. For a quieter lap, aim for a weekday midday.
