Matilda Mont Albert

Matilda Mont Albert is a Parisian-inspired corner cafe at 15 Arcade Road, Mont Albert North, built around a pastry case, Cobb Lane breads and a leafy outdoor seating area where dogs are welcome. It is a food-first cafe: blueberry scones, bagels and toasties with a strong vegan and gluten-free bench alongside, so it earns the detour even before you factor in the dog setup. Do not confuse it with the St Kilda restaurant of the same name.

The dog setup

Dogs join you in the outdoor seating under the trees, on lead, and are asked to stay put at your table rather than roam between the chairs. Indoors is people only. There is no guarantee of a bowl on the day, so carry water for your dog, particularly in summer. The front tables fill fast on weekends, so come early if you want a spot with your dog in tow.

Worth knowing

The signature Matilda toastie stacks pumpkin, kale, onion jam and vegan feta, and the rotating pastry and celebration-cake case covers vegan and gluten-free too. Their sister spot, Petite by Matilda, is a short walk up the same road and runs a dedicated puppuccino and toast-scrap treat list for dogs. Hours run 8am to 3pm Monday to Thursday, later on Friday and Saturday nights, and 8am to 5pm Sunday. Parking is street-only along Arcade Road and the surrounding residential streets.

Close by with the dogs

Mont Albert Reserve is the local off-leash patch when no sport is on, with a lap-friendly path around the oval. The Koonung Creek Trail is close for a longer loop before brunch, though dogs stay on lead on the main path. Butterfly House on Milne is the other neighbourhood cafe option nearby.
