Macleay Park Dog Off Leash Area

Macleay Park is a large open sports reserve on Belmore Road in Balwyn North with an unfenced off-leash area. Three big ovals and mature tree cover give it genuine room to run, which is exactly why it suits a high-energy dog that finds a small fenced pen underwhelming.

The dog setup

Boroondara runs Macleay Park as a shared space, so the rules are tighter than at a dedicated dog park. Off-lead access is typically limited to mornings until mid-morning and late afternoon until dusk, dogs go back on lead whenever training or matches are on the ovals, and the council caps it at two dogs per person. Effective control and eyes-on supervision apply at all times, and the 10 metre playground buffer holds even off lead.

Because the area is unfenced with roads and car parks at the edges, recall is the entry ticket. Skip the weeknight training window if your dog is easily distracted; that is when the space is busiest and a wandering dog is most likely to drift toward traffic.

What's there

A drinking fountain with a dog bowl, benches and picnic tables, and solid shade from mature trees. Bins are on site but bags are not supplied, so bring your own. Posted hours can shift with seasonal sports allocations, so check the signage on the day.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits at 101 Belmore Road, Balwyn North, with a large free off-street car park entered directly off Belmore Road. Buses run along Belmore Road with stops near the entrance, and the neighbouring streets offer overflow parking on quieter days.

If an unfenced oval is too loose for your dog, Gordon Barnard Reserve Fenced Dog Play Area is Boroondara's secure option further down Belmore Road, and Hislop Park Dog Off Leash Area is another nearby reserve.
