The short version. Briquettes is a small early-opening coffee shop on the corner of Willsmere Road and Brougham Street in Kew, set in a restored historic building that was once a firewood yard. It has become a fixture for local dog walkers and run clubs.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating, which is part-covered and catches the sun. Water is put out for dogs, and staff are known to hand out free puppuccinos. It suits both big and small dogs and gets sociable at busy times.

Good to know. The draw is good coffee from very early (often 6am), plus toasties, pastries and quick breakfast rolls. It is a stand-and-go sort of place as much as a sit-down one, so it works well as a stop mid-walk.

When to go. Open seven days from early morning. The footpath can crowd with walking groups on weekend mornings; a weekday visit is calmer if you want a quiet spot to tie up.
