Jacana Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Jacana Reserve's off-leash area is the fenced oval on Mascoma Street, shared with the reserve's sporting facilities. That dual role is the appeal: when the ground is not booked for cricket or football, it doubles as one of the better places in Hume for a serious off-lead run behind a fence.

The dog setup

Dogs need to be under effective voice or visual control at all times, and you must carry a leash for each dog even while off-leash. Dogs are prohibited within 50 metres of the playground and skate park. If a cricket match or training session is on the oval, dogs go back on lead, and waste goes in the bins provided.

Pepsi: a big fenced oval like this is made for fetch. Just check the noticeboard for sport bookings before you let the leash go.

Worth knowing

Beyond the oval, the reserve has a pavilion, a playground on the east side, cricket nets and tennis courts, so it is a busy community ground rather than a quiet paddock. The grass turns boggy after rain, which matters as much as the fixture list when you are planning a visit.

Getting there and parking

Access is via Mascoma Street, with a dedicated car park on the reserve's north side. Jacana Railway Station on the Craigieburn line is within walking distance, which makes this one of the easier off-leash ovals to reach without a car.

While you're out there

24 Emus is the suburb's own dog-friendly cafe stop, and if the oval is booked for sport, the fenced yard at Bent Street Dog Park in Moonee Ponds is a short drive away. Sewell Reserve in Glenroy is another nearby off-leash option.

When to go

Weekend mornings and weekday evenings after 5pm are the busiest with local dogs; weekday mid-mornings are quieter. Skirt the boggy patches after rain, and confirm the oval is sport-free before committing to an off-lead session.
