Howard Dog Park (Prosper Street)

The Howard dog park is a fenced, off-leash run on Prosper Street at its corner with James Street in Howard, a small Fraser Coast town in Queensland. Sitting just off the Bruce Highway, it doubles as a practical leg-stretch stop for travellers heading to or from Burrum Heads and Hervey Bay, and it is open 24 hours.

The dog setup

The park is a triangular, fully fenced grassy space with a double-gate entry, combining an open running area with a smaller fenced section for dogs that need a more contained space. A water tap sits inside the park and there is a bag dispenser, though bins rely on owners doing the right thing: waste is removed immediately, gates get closed on entry and exit, and any dog showing aggression toward people or other dogs is taken straight out. A leash is required the moment you step outside the fence, and effective voice control applies even while off-leash.

Max: close the gate behind you before unleashing. A closed gate is the difference between a safe recall drill and a dash toward the highway.

The vibe

Quiet and rural, with unshaded seating and only a few trees, so pack a hat in summer. Mid-morning and early afternoon are the calmest periods, and the park busies up early in the day and again after 3pm. Being inland, it is unaffected by tides and beach crowds, which makes it a reliable dry-weather option year round.

Getting there and parking

The park is at the corner of James and Prosper Streets, Howard QLD 4659, reached off the Bruce Highway. Street parking runs along the perimeter near the entrance. There is no rail service to plan around; the old Howard station sits on the line but this is a car trip for most visitors.

Close by with the dogs

Howard itself has a bakery and the Grand Hotel for a quick bite, but for proper dog-friendly dining Maryborough, about 25 minutes north, has more: Street Feast Cafe and Toast Espresso Bar both serve the town centre. If you want a second fenced run, the Rambo Dog Park is Maryborough's main enclosure.
