Jo Gapper Fenced Dog Park

Jo Gapper Fenced Dog Park sits on a hillside within the Jo Gapper Activity Park in Hillbank, a City of Playford facility north east of Adelaide. The fully fenced perimeter is the reason people drive here: dogs with unreliable recall get a contained space to run and socialise, well away from the roads and sports fields around the reserve.

The dog setup

The enclosure splits into two fenced sections: a small dog area for dogs up to 14kg and an all-dogs area for everything else. The ground slopes across the hillside, agility gear including logs, tunnels and mounds gives energetic dogs a workout, and dual-use water fountains cover both ends of the lead. A dedicated car park sits immediately beside the dog park at the top of the hill, so there is no trek with an excited dog.

Playford's conditions are firmer than most parks: dogs must be registered and vaccinated with a visible tag, puppies under six months are not permitted, and dogs that are sick or females in season are barred outright. Stay on site and supervise actively, remove any dog that turns aggressive or persistently disruptive, and supervise children closely around unfamiliar dogs. Dogs stay on lead in the wider activity park outside the fenced enclosure.

Pepsi: The hillside drains well but there is not much shade across the enclosure. In summer, go early or late and bring water even though the fountains work.

Worth knowing

Because the enclosure sits inside the larger Jo Gapper Activity Park, families can split the day: public toilets, a playground and basketball and tennis courts sit just outside the fence. A lighting tower extends evening sessions, which helps in summer when the heat rules out midday. The hillside location also connects to walking tracks, though those are on-lead zones.

Getting there and parking

The park is in Hillbank, roughly a 10 to 15 minute drive from Elizabeth and about half an hour from the Adelaide CBD via Main North Road. Access is through the Jo Gapper Activity Park, with parking in the dedicated car park adjacent to the enclosure. Elizabeth Station on the Gawler rail line is the nearest public transport, but the last leg is not walkable-friendly, so plan on a car, taxi or rideshare.
