Gordonvale Dog Park

Gordonvale Dog Park is an open, unfenced off-leash exercise area at 19-23 Klarwein Close, part of Howard Bailey Park on Gordonvale's southern edge and run by Cairns Regional Council. It suits dogs with solid recall rather than nervous escape artists, and the quiet residential setting makes it a low-fuss stop rather than a destination park.

The dog setup

Open grassed space for running and play, with some shaded spots to rest along the mature trees at the park edge. Facilities are basic by design: bring your own water and bags, and do not expect agility gear, taps or a locked enclosure. The off-leash zone is bounded by houses and a rear drain, so keep an eye on the edges while your dog works the boundary.

The rules

Leads stay on entering and leaving, then off lead inside under effective voice control. Under council rules your dog must not rush or nuisance other people or animals, and you carry a lead to restrain them the moment it is needed. Unfenced means the honesty system does the fencing, so remove an aggressive dog straight away.

Max: no fence means recall is the whole game here. Keep a new or reactive dog on a long lead until you have seen who else is using the park that day.

Getting there

Klarwein Close sits just off the Bruce Highway and Gillies Range Road area behind the Gordonvale town centre. Street parking on Klarwein Close and the surrounding residential streets is the norm; there is no dedicated car park.

Make a day of it

The Edmonton Dog Park up the highway at Fuller Park is the fenced alternative if recall is not your dog's strong suit. CMCA Greenpatch Campground takes dogs on lead for overnight stays if you are passing through with a van, and the BIG4 Ingenia Holidays Cairns Coconut is the bigger pet-friendly option toward Cairns.
