Mount Peter Foodstore & Take Away

Mount Peter Foodstore & Take Away is a locally owned fish and chip shop on Mount Peter Road in Edmonton, on Cairns' southern side. It does the classics properly: battered and crumbed fish, potato scallops, seafood packs and old-school burgers with the lot. Locals and tradies queue through lunch for it, and with counter service plus outdoor tables out the front, it's an easy stop to make with the dog in tow.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor seating beside the shop, which suits a quick counter-order lunch better than a long sit-down. Because the tables sit close to Mount Peter Road, keep your dog on a short lead and well clear of the driveway and passing traffic, especially through the lunch rush when the forecourt gets busy with tradie utes. Bring your own water bowl, as there is no confirmed dog bowl on site.

What to order

The menu leans hard into fresh seafood: fish pieces cooked battered, crumbed or grilled, fisherman's baskets loaded with prawns and calamari, and share packs that feed the whole family. The burgers are the other drawcard, including the fish burger, steak sandwich and hot dogs with the lot. Chips come with gravy if you want them, and sweet chilli cheesy fries round out the sides. The shop runs from 10am to 8pm, seven days a week, with the food counter covering breakfast through dinner.

Getting there and parking

The shop is at 78 Mount Peter Road, Edmonton, about 20 minutes south of Cairns city. Street parking sits directly out front and along the road, though it tightens up around midday when the tradie crowd rolls in. If you are coming off the Bruce Highway, it is a short detour and there is easy access back on for the drive south toward Gordonvale.

Close by with the dogs

The surrounding streets are quiet residential blocks, fine for a short leg-stretch before or after eating. For a proper off-lead run, Edmonton Dog Park is only a few minutes away. Travelling further with the dog overnight? Barrier Reef Tourist Park welcomes pets and sits handy to the highway. For another easy feed in the same suburb, Sim's Takeaway and Cafe is the local alternative.
