Barrier Reef Tourist Park

Barrier Reef Tourist Park is a caravan and holiday park in Edmonton, south of Cairns, that takes a clear position on dogs: they are welcome, but only on the caravan and motorhome ensuite sites. If you are travelling the Bruce Highway with a van and a dog, that is exactly the setup you want, with private ensuite facilities and room to settle. If you were hoping for a cabin or villa, this is not the park for that arrangement.

Dogs at the park

Pets are permitted exclusively on the powered ensuite caravan sites. No dogs are allowed inside the cabins, studios or villas under any circumstances. There is no published weight limit, and pet fees are quoted on application rather than listed, so call the park at booking to confirm the current charge, any breed or number limits, and site availability. On site, the ground rules are standard for a working caravan park: dogs leashed at all times, clean up immediately, and no disturbance to other guests.

Max: ensuite sites book out first in the dry season, and dog approval sits on top of that. Ring ahead rather than rolling up with a van and hoping.

Worth knowing

The park has a reputation for being well managed and quiet, with an approachable manager and reception staff guests describe as helpful and obliging, which matters when you are travelling with a dog and need a little flexibility. The ensuite sites themselves carry private shower and toilet, power, water, sullage and a concrete slab, so you are not roughing it.

While you're out there

The Edmonton Dog Park is the local off-leash option, and Mount Sheridan Off Leash area is a short drive south. The Ivan Evans Walk at Bayview Heights is a bushland circuit for an on-lead leg stretch.
