Gerringong Headland dog off-leash area

The Gerringong Headland dog off-leash area is one of the South Coast's better council dog spots: a large designated zone on the clifftops with ocean views and a whale watching platform right in the mix. Kiama Council lists it as an off-leash area, and the headland position means most of your walk is done with a sea view rather than a fence line. The access point off Tasman Drive puts you on the grass within a minute of the car, which is rare for a zone this size.

The dog setup

The off-leash area is generous by council standards, and you reach it from Tasman Drive. Kiama Council's conditions are specific: dogs must be under the effective control of a person aged 16 or over, they go back on leash outside the designated area, dangerous and restricted breeds are prohibited, and greyhounds must be muzzled unless they hold a retraining exemption. Because the zone is unfenced coastline, a reliable recall matters, particularly on days when the wind is up and the whales are drawing a crowd. The grass runs close to the cliff edge in places, so dogs that chase over the horizon need watching on the seaward side.

While you're out there

The whale watching platform makes winter visits worthwhile, and the headland links into the coast walking routes south of Kiama, so a short off-lead run can stretch into a proper coastal session. If you want a longer outing, the Loves Bay via Kiama Blowholes trail is a dog-friendly option further up the coast. Closer to town, Clay Coffee Collective and Werri Beach Holiday Park cover the coffee and overnight bases, and Cronin's Gerringong Hotel sits in the middle of town for a meal stop.

Tasman Drive has residential street parking near the access points, and it fills on fine weekends and during whale season, so a morning run is the calmer pick. The headland is exposed, so a windy day is a different visit to a still one, and morning light over Werri Beach is worth timing for.
