Franklin Dog Park

Franklin Dog Park is a fully fenced, off-leash enclosure at the corner of Nullarbor Avenue and Oodgeroo Avenue in Franklin, Gungahlin. At 2,870 square metres with a 1.7-metre chain link perimeter, it is a compact but well-equipped space that earns its keep for locals wanting a secure spot for a run and some training.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted inside the fenced area only. The surrounding public spaces require your dog back on lead. Handlers must keep dogs under effective control at all times, and the on-site agility equipment should be used responsibly to prevent crowding in that zone. Dog poo bag dispensers and bins are provided, so there is no excuse for not cleaning up.

What's there. An irrigated grass surface covers the main area, suitable for ball and frisbee work. A dedicated agility zone offers weave poles, a pyramid ramp, hoops, bar jumps and logs. There is a covered seating area and a dog drinking fountain on-site. Forty-eight young trees have been planted for shade and habitat, though they will need time to mature before offering real cover. An accessible loop path runs around the interior.

Getting there. A small asphalt car park provides 7 spaces, including 2 accessible spots and 5 bike rails. That is the hard ceiling on parking, and it fills fast. The Franklin light rail stop on Flemington Road is a short walk away, and the park is easily reached on foot or bike from the Franklin residential area via local pathways.

Nearby. The Gungahlin town centre is a short trip away for a post-walk coffee or a meal. Try Caffe al Lago or EQ Cafe & Restaurant, and if you want a second off-leash option, DogsACT in Gungahlin is worth a look.

When to go. Weekdays are busiest early morning and late afternoon, and weekends see heavy use across the board. For a quieter session, aim for mid-morning to early afternoon on a weekday. During peak times, walk or take the light rail rather than chancing the car park.
