What visitors mention
A big, bushy off-leash reserve on the Parramatta side. Cowell's Lane Reserve is a roughly 15-hectare open space in Ermington with walking tracks, wetland boardwalks and scattered mature trees. The reason to bring the dog is space: it is a designated off-leash exercise area with real room to run, not a small fenced pen.
The rules. The reserve is an off-leash dog area, and dogs must stay under effective control, meaning a reliable recall. Keep dogs at least 10 metres clear of the children's playground. Cleaning up after your dog is required and bins are provided. One person may walk up to four dogs at once.
What to watch. The reserve is not fully fenced. Natural barriers border much of it, but there are gaps that lead out to residential roads, so a dog with a shaky recall needs watching near the edges. After rain the ground turns genuinely muddy, so keep a towel in the car.
What is there. Paved tracks and a wetland boardwalk, exercise stations, seating and night lighting for early or late walks in winter. Water taps for dogs are limited, so bring your own bowl.

Getting there. Access is off Cowells Lane, which connects through from Kissing Point Road. Street parking is available but fills on weekends and during team-sport times, so consider parking further down the street if the entrance is full. Bus stops on Bartlett Street or Victoria Road are within a short walk.
Nearby with the dogs. Salt and Butter Cafe on the riverfront, about 2km away, has dog-friendly outdoor tables for afterwards.
When to go. Busiest weekend mornings from around 8 to 11am and weekday evenings from about 4:30 to 6:30pm. For a timid dog, weekday mid-mornings or mid-afternoons are much quieter. Good for big runners with solid recall.
