Cowell's Lane Reserve

Cowell's Lane Reserve is a roughly 15 hectare open space in Ermington, on the Parramatta side of Sydney, and the entire reserve works as a designated off lead dog exercise area. The reason to come is space: real room to run with walking tracks and mature trees, not a small fenced pen.

Max: big open ground and friendly dogs, but keep an eye on the edges because it is not fenced all the way around.

The dog setup

Off lead applies across the reserve, under the council's effective control rules: a reliable recall, eyes on your dog at all times, a leash carried with you, and no more than four dogs per person. Dogs stay at least 10 metres clear of the children's playground and out of the sporting areas when games are on. The reserve is not fully fenced; natural barriers cover much of the boundary but there are gaps toward residential streets, so a dog with a shaky recall should stay on lead until you know the edges.

Worth knowing

Paved circuit paths and walking tracks loop the reserve, with exercise stations, seating and lighting that make winter early morning or evening walks workable. There is a sports field, tennis courts and a playground sharing the space, so weekend mornings carry a family crowd too. After rain the low ground turns genuinely muddy; a towel in the car earns its place. Dog water points are limited, so bring a bowl.

Getting there and parking

Entry is off Cowells Lane, which connects through from Kissing Point Road, and the reserve is open around the clock. Street parking lines the lane near the playground and tennis courts and fills quickly on weekends and during team sport times, so be ready to walk from further down the street. Bus stops on Bartlett Street and Victoria Road are a short walk away.

While you're out there

Weekend mornings from 8 to 11 and weekday late afternoons are the busy windows; quieter stretches suit a timid dog better. Afterwards, Salt and Butter Cafe on the riverfront has dog friendly outdoor tables about two kilometres away. If you would rather have a fence, the George Kendall Riverside Park fenced dog park is close by in Ermington, and Meadowbank Dog Beach is a short drive up the river.
