Coffee with a river view. Salt and Butter is a casual waterfront cafe on the Parramatta River at Ermington, and the draw for dog owners is simple: outdoor tables right on the foreshore, at the end of a riverside walk or ride.

The dog setup. Dogs are welcome at the outdoor tables, which sit in a spacious, partly covered area on the waterfront. Dogs are not permitted inside. Staff are known to be friendly to dogs and puppacinos turn up from time to time, though it is worth bringing your own water bowl to be sure on a warm day.

Good to know. The kitchen runs on Campos coffee and a busy brunch menu, and reviewers rate it highly for the setting as much as the food. It is a favourite pit stop for dog walkers, joggers and cyclists working the river path, so weekend mornings and sunny afternoons get crowded.

Getting there. The cafe is at 1/48-56 Bundarra Street, at the end of the residential precinct on the water. Free street parking is available in the surrounding streets, though it fills on fine weekends. Coming on foot from the parklands is often easier than driving.

Nearby with the dogs. The Ermington riverside path runs right past for a pre- or post-brunch walk, and the George Kendall Riverside Park off-leash area is a short trip along the river.

When to go. Come mid-morning on a weekday for a table without the queue, or accept the buzz at weekends. Good for a leg-stretch and a flat white after a river walk.
