Sydney Olympic Park off-leash area

The short version. This is the main off-leash run for Sydney Olympic Park, a large open grassy field sitting directly behind the P5 car park on Hill Road. It is open 24/7, bordered by mangroves and bushland, and stays noticeably quieter than most inner-west dog parks.

The rules. Dogs run free only within the marked off-leash zone behind P5. Everywhere else in the park precinct, including all sealed paths and lawns, dogs must be on-leash. Dogs are banned outright from Badu Mangroves, the Brickpit Ring Walk, Newington Armory and Narawang Wetland. Limit of four dogs per person, and you must pick up and bin any mess.

The catch. The area is only partly fenced and the lower half opens straight onto mangroves. If your dog has patchy recall, keep to the top end and stay watchful near the mud line, or you will be wading in after them.

What is there. A big open space to gallop, and that is mostly it. Shade is limited, on-site water and toilets are basic, so bring your own water on warm days. The saving grace is parking sits right at the gate.

Getting there. Drive in via Hill Road and use the P5 car park, which backs directly onto the field. On public transport, Olympic Park Station is the nearest rail, with a walk or a local bus down Hill Road to finish. The official Sydney Olympic Park dog map shows the exact boundary.

When to go. Sunday and Tuesday mornings draw the crowd. Mid-week late mornings or around sunset are quiet and scenic. Good for big runners who want room, less so for nervous dogs given the open, unfenced edges.
