Koonung Creek Linear Park Dog Off Leash Area (Doncaster)

Koonung Creek Linear Park runs along the Eastern Freeway corridor through Doncaster, a long, leafy trail-based off-leash space rather than a contained dog park. It suits a structured walk or run with a high-energy dog far better than it suits small enclosed play.

The dog setup

Dogs stay on lead on the main sealed shared trail and within a few metres of it. Off-lead use is for the open grass and bushland bordering the creek, and only while your dog is under effective voice or hand-signal control. Clip up within 15 metres of playgrounds, barbecues and sports fields. The corridor is unfenced and sits beside the creek and a fenced freeway, so reliable recall is essential. Read the council signage for the section you are using before unclipping, because boundaries are confirmed on site.

Facilities are sparse along the trail: limited benches, few if any bins, and no dog water fountains. Carry your own water and bags, and plan to take waste out with you. Adjacent Koonung Park covers the basics with playgrounds and toilets.

Max: This is a trail, not a fenced park. Keep to the grass away from the bike path, and do not assume off-lead until you have read the signs for this section.

Worth knowing

The shared trail is busy with cyclists, especially at commuter times, and a bike-reactive dog will be happier on the grassed areas away from the path. Parts of the corridor are subject to detours and temporary closures from North East Link construction, so check on-site signage for changed path alignments before you set out. Mid-morning and early afternoon are the quiet windows; weekday peaks and weekend mornings belong to the cyclists.

Access points run off side streets along the corridor near the Koonung Park end, with on-street parking in the surrounding streets. Local buses along Bulleen Road and Doncaster Road put you within walking distance of several entrances.
