Green Park

Green Park runs to one of the simplest rules in inner Sydney: dogs are off leash here at all times. City of Sydney lists the pocket park at the corner of Victoria Street, Burton Street and Darlinghurst Road as a 24/7 off-leash area, so an early walk before work and a late stroll after dinner are both fair game. It is a small, leafy block rather than a big running ground, which suits a short, social stop in a dense suburb.

Leash status and ground rules

Council designates the whole park off leash around the clock, but control is the condition that comes with it. Handlers are expected to stay in command of their dog and carry waste bags, and dogs are kept off the monuments on the site, including the Gay and Lesbian Holocaust Memorial. The ground itself is mostly grass under mature shade, with benches and garden beds that give it a quiet, sit-down feel compared with the busier squares closer to Oxford Street. Bring bags from home or use what you carry, because the expectation on waste is set by the council rules rather than park bins alone.

Making a circuit of it

Because the park is compact, most dog owners treat it as one stop on a longer loop rather than a destination in itself. Rosebank Park sits just down the hill and adds a second green stop, while Embarkation Park works well if you swing the walk up towards Potts Point. Both are easy to fold into the same outing without repeating ground, and the strip along Victoria Street keeps the pavement interesting for a dog that likes company.

Getting there

The park fronts Victoria Street at the Darlinghurst Road corner, and street parking around the surrounding blocks is metered and often tight on weekends, so walking or arriving on foot from the Kings Cross end is the easier option. Once the walk is done, the suburb has no shortage of dog-friendly cafes and pubs within a few blocks; Taphouse Sydney is one of the closest for a pint afterwards.
