Taphouse Sydney

The Taphouse on Flinders Street is a three-level Darlinghurst pub with a serious craft-beer list and a dog policy the venue publishes openly: dogs are welcome in the public bar, the alfresco area and up on the rooftop. For an inner-city pub, that much access is rare enough to make this a reliable pick.

The dog setup

Dogs of all shapes and sizes are welcome on lead across the public bar, the street-side alfresco seating and the open-air rooftop, so you are not stuck with a single footpath table on a hot day. Staff bring out water bowls, and the rooftop is the pick when the sun is out. Well-behaved and settled is the expectation; the venue gets busy and loud at peak times, which is worth thinking through if your dog startles easily.

Max: Sunny afternoon on the rooftop, water bowl down, a rotation tap to work through. Book ahead on weekends though, it fills.

The vibe

The draw is an extensive rotating tap list with regular happy hours, backed by an inventive Cantonese-inspired kitchen, wontons and bang-bang wings among the pub staples, and a Sunday roast that has its own following. Trivia nights and big screens keep the public bar lively. Doors open from 4pm early in the week, from 11.30am Friday to Sunday, so weekend afternoons are the natural dog-friendly window.

Getting there and parking

The pub sits at 122 Flinders Street, Darlinghurst, near the Moore Park end of Surry Hills. Street parking nearby is limited and paid, and most people arrive on foot or by bus along Oxford Street or South Dowling Street. If you are driving in for a weekend session, budget time to find a spot.

Close by with the dogs

Moore Park West is about a seven minute walk for an on-lead leg-stretch before or after, Ward Park in Surry Hills is another nearby green, and Forrester's in Surry Hills is a second dog-welcoming pub if you are making a crawl of it.
