Banyan Reserve is a large, open off-leash area on Luscombe Avenue in Carrum Downs, managed by Frankston City Council. It is a raw, roughly 8-hectare space of oval, retarding basin and wetland, open 24 hours a day, and the choice for a high-stamina dog that needs a proper run rather than a tidy fenced enclosure.
The rules. Off-leash access runs 24/7 across the reserve, and it is unlit at night. The main area is not fully fenced and borders open wetland, so reliable recall matters here more than at an enclosed park. Keep your dog under effective voice control near the water's edge and in the longer grass, leash up in the designated playground, and clean up straight away using the supplied bins.
What's there. There is a water station for dogs and people, poo bins, a small children's playground and public toilets, though the toilets are sometimes only open around scheduled sporting events. Accessible parking and entrances are provided.
Watch-outs. The wetland edges and long grass are the trade-off for the space. Watch for snakes in the unmanicured grass through the warmer months, and expect mud after heavy rain. Because it is unfenced by the water, this is not the spot for a dog with shaky recall.

Getting there. On-site parking runs off Luscombe Avenue, with easy access from the Dandenong Valley Highway about a kilometre west. Local bus routes serve the surrounding streets, but most people drive in.
Nearby with the dogs. The Carrum Downs Regional Shopping Centre is close, with local cafes offering outdoor seating for a coffee afterwards. Pet-friendly rooms sit a short drive away in Frankston.
Weekday early mornings and late nights are quietest. Saturday evenings and weekday late afternoons are the busy stretches. Good for big runners with solid recall; skip it in the wet if you mind the mud.
