The short version. This is the off-leash dog exercise area on Cannonvale Beach, at the eastern end running towards the Bicentennial Walkway. It is a time-share arrangement under Whitsunday Regional Council: off-leash on the sand only inside set morning and evening windows, on leash everywhere else.

The rules. Off-leash is permitted on the sand at the eastern end only, and only within the posted time windows, which local sources put at early morning and early evening. Outside those hours, and on the Bicentennial Walkway and surrounding parkland, dogs must be leashed. Dogs must be under effective voice control at all times, and leashed if they will not respond. Check the council signage on site before you unclip, as time-share windows are the kind of detail councils adjust.

The water and terrain. Soft sand with calm Whitsunday water, best at low to mid tide when the most sand is exposed for running. Natural shade on the beach itself is limited, with a little more cover in the parkland behind.

What is there. Dog waste bins sit at the beach access points, and the paved Bicentennial Walkway runs alongside for on-leash walking. Access to the sand is direct and flat.

Getting there. Coral Esplanade, Cannonvale, next to Fat Frog Beach Cafe. Street parking runs along the esplanade and fills at peak times. The spot sits on the Bicentennial Walkway, so you can also walk or ride in from Airlie Beach, and local buses stop close by.

Watch-outs. Queensland sun is fierce, so mind hot sand and heat in summer and bring water. Stay clear of nearby boat ramps and boating activity. This is northern Queensland coast, so be marine-stinger aware in the warmer months.

The off-leash window is short and shared with the school-run buffer, so read the sign before you unclip and keep recall tight near the walkway.

Nearby with the dogs. Fat Frog Beach Cafe is right on the beachfront with water bowls and a dog menu, and The Sweet Spot Whitsundays at Coral Sea Marina is a short trip away.

Aim for the early-morning window at low tide, before the beach fills and before the heat builds, and keep the lead handy for the walkway on the way out.
