Cannonvale Dog Exercise Area

The Cannonvale Dog Exercise Area occupies the eastern end of Cannonvale Beach on Coral Esplanade, where the sand opens onto calm Whitsunday water and the Bicentennial Walkway runs past behind. Under Whitsunday Regional Council's rules this is a time-share off-leash beach: wide windows through the day when dogs can run free on the sand, on-lead at all other times and everywhere else.

Leash status

Council lists the permitted off-leash times at Cannonvale Beach as 5am to 8pm daily, except between 8am and 9am and 2:30pm to 3:30pm on school days. Outside those windows, and on the walkway and surrounding parkland, your dog stays on lead. Effective voice or hand control is required the whole time, you must carry a leash, and dogs may not rush at or menace other people or animals. Check the signage on site before you unclip, because councils adjust time-share details.

Max: clip the lead back on before you step off the sand onto the Bicentennial Walkway. The beach boundary and the path boundary are not the same line.

Water and terrain

The beach is soft sand with generally calm, shallow water that suits splashing dogs more than strong swimmers, and low to mid tide exposes the most running room. Shade on the sand itself is limited, with more cover in the parkland behind, and the Queensland sun makes midday hot underfoot in summer. Waste bins sit at the beach access points, and access from the esplanade is flat and direct.

Getting there and parking

The access is off Coral Esplanade in Cannonvale, next to Fat Frog Beach Cafe. Street parking runs along the esplanade and fills at peak times. The beach sits on the Bicentennial Walkway, so you can also walk or ride in from Airlie Beach, and local buses stop close by.

Worth knowing

This is tropical north Queensland water, so be marine stinger aware in the warmer months and keep clear of boat ramps and boating activity nearby. Bring water for both of you, as there is no guaranteed tap at the eastern end.

When to go

Early morning just after 5am is the quietest and coolest window, and the late afternoon run before 8pm is the other local favourite. The school-day exclusions carve out 8am to 9am and 2:30pm to 3:30pm, so plan around those if you visit on a weekday.

While you're out there

Fat Frog Beach Cafe is right on the esplanade with a famously dog-friendly deck and even a dog menu, an easy coffee stop after the beach. The Airlie Beach Boardwalk continues the on-lead foreshore walk towards Airlie Beach, and NRMA Airlie Beach Holiday Park is the local pet-friendly base if you are staying over.
