Fraser Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Fraser Reserve is a leafy neighbourhood park on Hopetoun Avenue in Brunswick West with a designated 24/7 off-leash area under Merri-bek City Council rules. It is smaller and calmer than the big local reserves, and that is exactly its appeal: a relaxed fetch session close to home rather than a sprawling social romp.

Leash status

The reserve is off-leash at all hours, with dogs under effective voice or hand control and a leash carried ready at all times. The boundary rules are the standard Merri-bek set: dogs are prohibited within fifteen metres of the children's playground, must be leashed within fifteen metres of sporting grounds, picnic and barbecue areas when in use, and stay on shared pathways. They also stay off the sports field during organised sport. The reserve itself is unfenced and opens onto a residential street, so dependable recall matters here.

Max: no fence and the park runs straight to Hopetoun Avenue. A dog that likes to chase needs to stay in sight, and the playground buffer on the corner is a hard no-go.

Water and terrain

Open green space for fetch, established trees for shade, bench seating and paved walking paths loop the reserve. Dedicated dog water and bag facilities are limited, so bring your own bowl, water and bags. The adjoining tennis courts and a well-equipped playground with a nature-play area share the site.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits near the corner of Pearson Street and Hopetoun Avenue with residential street parking. The 58 tram along Melville Road is a short walk, and most visitors arrive on foot or by bike from the surrounding streets, which keeps the atmosphere genuinely local.

When to go

Weekday mornings and late afternoons plus weekend mornings draw the regulars; weekday midday is the quiet window. It suits dogs that prefer a smaller group and owners who want a low-key run. If your dog needs a fully fenced space instead, look below.
