The short version. Fraser Reserve on Hopetoun Avenue in Brunswick West is a leafy neighbourhood park with a designated 24/7 off-leash area, a calmer alternative to the larger local reserves. It is unfenced and sits in a residential pocket, so it suits dogs with dependable recall.

The rules. Off-leash all hours under effective voice control, with a leash carried at all times. Dogs are prohibited within 15 metres of the children's playground and must be on-leash within 15 metres of sporting grounds and picnic or barbecue areas when in use, on shared pathways, and off the sports field during organised sport. This is a Merri-bek City Council site.

What's there. Open green space for fetch, established trees for shade, bench seating and paved walking paths, plus a well-equipped playground with a nature-play area and adjoining tennis courts. Dedicated dog water and waste-bag facilities are limited, so bring your own bowl, water and bags.

Getting there. Near the corner of Pearson Street and Hopetoun Avenue, with residential street parking on Hopetoun Avenue. The 58 tram along Melville Road is a short walk. Most visitors arrive on foot or by bike from nearby streets.

The park opens onto Hopetoun Avenue and there is no fence. Keep a dog that likes to chase within sight, and steer clear of the playground buffer.

Busiest weekday mornings and late afternoons and weekend mornings; weekday mid-day is the quiet window. Good for a relaxed local run rather than a big open sprint.
