Haig Park Dog Agility Course

Haig Park is a long, tree-lined heritage park running through the middle of Braddon, and tucked into it is a small dog agility course with a scattering of obstacles for an energetic dog. The defining catch is what it lacks: fencing. The agility area sits in open parkland with busy roads close by, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than first-timers off the lead.

The rules

Most of Haig Park is designated off-leash under Parks ACT rules, but dogs must stay on lead along the designated shared paths that cut through it, and the boundaries are not always obvious on the ground. Read the signage on arrival and keep your dog on lead until you are sure you are inside the off-leash zone. Under effective control applies everywhere, bins are provided, and pick-up is expected.

What's there

The agility equipment itself is basic: obstacles for exercise and play rather than a competition setup. Mature exotic trees give the park its character and most of its shade, seating is dotted along the edges, and the park also hosts regular community dog events that fill it with extra dogs and noise on scheduled days.

Max: walk the perimeter on lead first and find the signed off-leash boundary before you let go. With open roads this close, recall is the whole game here.

Getting there and parking

The park runs along the Braddon edge near Girrahween and Wattle Streets, with free street parking on the surrounding side streets. The Canberra light rail passes close by and drops you within a short walk, and if you are staying in Braddon or the city it is an easy walk in.

Close by with the dogs

Braddon's cafe strip starts at the park's edge: Supersweet Cafe and Casa Espresso both take dogs outside, and The Civic Pub covers a post-park lunch.

When to go

Weekday mornings and mid-afternoons are quietest. Weekend mornings, after-work evenings and dog event days draw the biggest crowds, which is good socialisation for a confident dog and hard work for a reactive one.
