The Civic Pub

The Civic Pub is a well-worn Braddon local on Lonsdale Street, built for long afternoons over a cold one and the football. It has a reputation as one of Canberra's most reliably dog-friendly pubs, which makes the front terrace an easy default for a drink with your dog.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome out on the large, tree-shaded street terrace at the front; indoors is people only. Water dishes can be requested at the bar, and the pub is known for keeping a dedicated dog menu, so it is worth asking staff on the day. Keep your dog leashed at the table and away from the service lanes, and grab an edge table if your dog needs room to settle.

The vibe

The menu is straightforward pub fare: schnitzels, the chicken parmigiana and steak, with Carlton Draught on tap, pool tables inside and QR code ordering to your table. The crowd is local and relaxed, busiest around sport and the regular comedy nights, and it goes quiet in the early afternoon.

Pepsi: the shaded terrace is the spot on a warm Canberra afternoon. Pick a corner table so there is space to flop without tripping the staff.

Getting there

The pub sits at 8 Lonsdale Street in the middle of the Braddon strip. Street parking on Lonsdale is handy but competitive, with paid parking around Braddon as backup, and it is an easy walk from Civic. It trades late most nights, until 11:30pm Monday to Thursday and Sunday, and 1am on Friday and Saturday.

Take the lead around Haig Park around the corner, where the dog agility course gives an energetic dog a proper warm-up before lunch. King O'Malley's in the city is another dog-friendly pub option, and Casa Espresso and Supersweet Cafe both cover the Braddon coffee run.
