Booragul Dog Exercise Area

Booragul Dog Exercise Area is a 24/7 off-leash reserve on the Lake Macquarie foreshore along Marmong Street, right beside the Multi-Arts Pavilion. It is a long, linear strip of grass and path with direct lake access, so it suits dogs who want a scenic walk and a swim rather than a fully fenced run.

The dog setup

The reserve is designated off-leash around the clock under Lake Macquarie City Council, but dogs must stay under effective control at all times. Only part of the area is fenced, with open sections near the shoreline, so solid recall matters if your dog is prone to wandering towards ducks or boats. Leash up around cyclists, joggers and other path users, and note that the surrounding public areas outside the marked zone are on-leash only. Off-leash in a restricted area attracts a fine, so confirm the boundary signage on the day. Waste bags and bins are provided, and there are no dog water stations, so bring your own water and bowl.

Max: the partial fencing near the water means this is not the spot for a dog with weak recall. Watch the shoreline sections especially.

The vibe

The path runs close to the water before opening into a larger grassy field that suits a proper run and a game of fetch. The lake itself has easy, shallow entry for a swim, and how far your dog can wade depends on the tide, so check a Lake Macquarie tide chart if swimming is the plan. Weekends and weekday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm draw the biggest crowds; mid-morning on a weekday gives an active dog the most room.

Getting there and parking

Drive in via Marmong Street; the free car park near the Booragul Jetty and MAP mima end is the easiest to find and sits close to the water. Booragul railway station is a short walk away if you are coming by train. Because the reserve is long and linear, walking further along the path usually finds you space even when the car park end is busy.

If you want a fully fenced alternative, Speers Point Fenced Dog Park is the closest enclosure and Croudace Bay Dog Park is the next one south. Bolton Point Dog Exercise Area keeps the waterside theme going.
