Booragul Dog Exercise Area

Booragul Dog Exercise Area is a 24/7 off-leash reserve on the Lake Macquarie foreshore at Marmong Street, right next to the Multi-Arts Pavilion. It is a long, linear strip of grass and path with direct lake access, so it suits dogs who want a scenic walk and a swim rather than a big fenced run.

The rules. The reserve is designated off-leash around the clock, but dogs must stay under effective voice control at all times. Only part of the area is fenced, with open sections near the shoreline, so recall matters if your dog is prone to wandering. Leash up around cyclists, joggers and other path users, and note that surrounding public areas outside the marked zone are on-leash only. Lake Macquarie Council fines for off-leash dogs in restricted areas run to $330, so it pays to know where the boundary actually is - confirm current signage on the day.

The water. The lake is right there, with easy, shallow entry for a swim. Access and how far your dog can wade in comfortably will depend on the tide, so check a Lake Macquarie tide chart if swimming is the plan.

What's there. A free car park sits near the Booragul Jetty and MAP mima, with public toilets and picnic tables in the reserve. There are no dog water stations on site, so bring your own water and a bowl. Waste bags and bins are provided.

Getting there. Drive in via Marmong Street; the car park at the jetty/MAP mima end is the easiest to find. Booragul railway station is a short walk away if you're coming by train.

Nearby with the dogs. Table 1 Espresso in Speers Point is a short drive away and known for its dog-friendly outdoor seating. Warners Bay's cafe strip is also close if you want more options after the walk.

When to go. Weekends and weekday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm draw the biggest crowds. Mid-morning on a weekday gives an active dog the most room to move, and because the reserve is long and linear, walking further along the path usually finds you space even when the car park end is busy.
