Bolton Point Dog Exercise Area

Bolton Point Dog Exercise Area is a 24/7 off-leash lakefront reserve on Lake Macquarie at the corner of Bay Road and Quigley Road, between Toronto and Fassifern. It is unfenced with direct water access onto a shallow, calm shoreline, which makes it a swim-and-run spot for dogs with reliable recall rather than a fit-everything park.

Leash status

Off-leash applies at all times under Lake Macquarie City Council's exercise-area rules, but voice control has to be real because there is no fence between the reserve, the road and neighbouring private properties. Bring your own bags, there are no dispensers on site, and use the bins provided. A playground and picnic area sit right next to the off-leash zone, so keep a close eye on your dog around kids.

Max: no fencing here means no safety net. Keep young or easily distracted dogs on a long line until you are sure of their recall around the road and the picnic area.

Water and terrain

The shoreline shelves gently into the lake, so most dogs can wade deep before they need to swim, and the water stays calm compared to an ocean beach. The reserve is open grass running to the water's edge; after rain it can get muddy, so factor in a dirty dog for the car trip. This is a confident-swimmer, solid-recall venue, less suitable for dogs that bolt toward roads or people.

Getting there and parking

The reserve is at the corner of Bay Road and Quigley Road, Bolton Point, with parking near the entrance on Bay Road. The closest train station is Booragul, a short drive or a moderate walk away along the lake edge.

Worth knowing

Facilities are basic: there is no shade, no benches and no fresh water station, so bring your own water, a bowl and something to sit on. Weekday mornings and Tuesday or Thursday evenings are the quiet windows; Sunday mornings, Friday mornings and evenings, and Saturday nights are the busiest. Good for confident swimmers with solid recall.

While you're out there

A few minutes away in Toronto, Tinto Espresso Bar & Infuzion Cafe has dog-friendly outdoor seating for the after-swim coffee. For a second session nearby, the Blackalls Park Dog Exercise Area and the Booragul Dog Exercise Area are both lakefront options in the same council run.
