Bolton Point Dog Exercise Area is a 24/7 off-leash lakefront reserve on Lake Macquarie, at the corner of Bay Road and Quigley Road. It is unfenced with direct water access, so it suits dogs with reliable recall rather than nervous or bolt-prone ones.
The rules. Off-leash at all times, but dogs need to be under voice control since the reserve is unfenced and borders the road and neighbouring private properties. Bring your own bags, there are no dispensers on site. A playground and picnic area sit right next to the off-leash zone, so keep a close eye on your dog around kids.
What's there. Parking near the entrance on Bay Road, a shallow, calm shoreline for swimming, and bins for waste. There is no shade, no benches, and no fresh water station, so bring your own water and something to sit on.
Getting there. Corner of Bay Road and Quigley Road, Bolton Point, between the Lake Macquarie suburbs of Toronto and Fassifern. The closest train station is Booragul, a short drive or a moderate walk away.

Nearby with the dogs. A few minutes away in Toronto, Cafe Deja Vu, Tinto Espresso Bar and Infuzion Cafe, and Bellunos all have dog-friendly outdoor seating on the waterfront.
When to go. Quietest on weekday mornings and Tuesday or Thursday evenings. Busiest Sunday mornings, Friday mornings and evenings, and Saturday nights. The grass can get muddy after rain, so factor that in if your dog isn't keen on a bath afterwards. Good for confident swimmers with solid recall, less so for dogs that bolt toward roads or people.
