Blackalls Park Dog Exercise Area

The Blackalls Park Dog Exercise Area is a leash-free reserve on the Lake Macquarie shoreline at Blackalls Avenue, with open flat grass, a few mature shade trees, and direct lake access for a paddle. It is open around the clock with free on-site parking, which is a rare combination this close to the water.

Leash status

Lake Macquarie City Council designates Blackalls Park Reserve as a leash-free area at all times, so there is no leash-on, leash-off switching once you are inside the boundary. Effective control still applies, dogs must be kept clear of the children's playground and food preparation areas, and pick-up is expected with bins on site. The important catch: the lake side of the reserve is not fenced, so your dog's recall is the boundary.

Max: the water side has no fence, so run new dogs on a long line until you know they will turn back from the lake when called.

Water and terrain

The ground is mostly flat, open grass suited to fetch and steady running rather than rough play. The lake edge is shallow close to shore, which suits paddlers, but depth and current shift with lake levels, so keep a closer eye on weaker swimmers and older dogs. This is a paddle-and-fetch swimming hole rather than an ocean-style swim.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits on Blackalls Avenue in Blackalls Park, just off the Toronto side of the lake, with straightforward access from the main Lake Macquarie roads. On-site parking is free and includes accessible spaces, and it does not tend to fill the way beach car parks do. Fassifern railway station is a short trip away and local buses stop nearby.

When to go

Weekend mornings and late afternoons in good weather draw the crowds; midweek mornings and weekday late afternoons are quieter and better if your dog is reactive or you are working on recall near the water.

Around the point, the Bolton Point Dog Exercise Area is the next lakeside leash-free stop. For coffee with a lake view, Tinto Espresso Bar & Infuzion Cafe sits on the Toronto foreshore with outdoor seating for dogs, and Doubletake Cafe is the other local pick.
