Lake Ginninderra Dog Park

Lake Ginninderra Dog Park is a fully fenced off-leash enclosure on the lake's western foreshore in Belconnen, minutes from the town centre, with separate runs for large and small dogs. It is the reliable pick when you want a safe off-lead session without driving out of Canberra.

The dog setup

Two fenced zones split large and small dogs, entered through a double gate, with open grass for running and scattered trees for shade. Water fountains inside are set up for both dogs and people, waste bags and bins are provided, and covered picnic seating sits at the edge.

A maximum of two dogs per person applies, and under ACT rules dogs must be registered, vaccinated and, unless a permit applies, desexed. Keep dogs away from playgrounds and off the main swimming beaches over summer.

Worth knowing

The off-leash rule stops at the fence: the lake paths beyond are on-lead, so clip up before you continue a circuit of the water. The enclosure is open 24 hours, though it is busiest after school and on weekend mornings.

The setting is the draw beyond the fences too. The park sits on the Lake Ginninderra loop trail, a 7 km flat circuit of the shoreline that pairs well with a session in the runs. Weekday mid-mornings are the quiet window if your dog prefers space to itself.

Max: big-dog enclosure for the zoomies, then the on-lead lap of the lake to cool everyone down. That is the standard Belconnen loop.

Getting there and parking Weekend mornings see the enclosures at their busiest, so allow a few extra minutes for a spot.

The enclosure sits off Diddams Close on the western foreshore, with parking beside John Knight Memorial Park and the Belconnen town centre a short walk away. Buses to the interchange put you within walking distance of the lake.

Close by with the dogs

For coffee after the swim or the sprint, EightyTwenty Belconnen and the Lighthouse Pub both handle dogs in their outdoor areas. Travelling through with the van, Abode Belconnen is the dog-friendly bed nearby.
