Cafe Birrigai

Cafe Birrigai sits at 2 Joy Cummings Place on the eastern foreshore of Lake Ginninderra, a short walk from the Belconnen town centre but a world away from its busy food court strip. It opens 8am to 3pm, seven days, and is known locally as one of the more genuinely dog-friendly tables in north Canberra, with a calm patio that slots neatly into a lap of the lake.

The dog setup

Dogs join you on the outdoor patio seating, which gets good shade through the morning. There is no formal dog menu or puppuccino here, but water is readily available and staff will bring a bowl on request. Keep your dog on lead and settled at the table. If you want guaranteed quiet, weekday mornings beat the weekend brunch window by a wide margin.

The menu and the view

This is classic cafe cooking done generously: a big breakfast plate, eggs on toast, and hash browns on the side, plus thickshakes and hot chocolates that reviewers keep singling out. Coffee is solid and the portions are on the filling side of the ledger. The drawcard is what is in front of you while you eat: the lake, the parkland, and the parade of walkers and their dogs on the foreshore path.

Getting there and parking

Joy Cummings Place is a short street off the lake side of Belconnen, walkable from the town centre and the lakeside apartments. Street parking outside can tighten up at peak brunch, so allow an extra minute on weekends. The whole lake circuit is paved and on-leash for dogs, so it is easy to build the cafe into a longer walk.

The fenced Lake Ginninderra Dog Park on Diddams Close has separate large and small dog enclosures and agility gear, right on the water. The Lake Ginninderra loop is the natural warm-up or cool-down, and Remedy by LSR is another Belconnen cafe that welcomes dogs if you are doing a comparison lap.
