Lake Ginninderra Loop Trail

Lake Ginninderra Loop Trail is a flat, paved 7.1 km circuit around the lake in Belconnen, ACT, and it is one of the easiest walks in Canberra to do with a dog on lead. Most of the route stays leashed, but the Diddams Close end has a proper off-leash beach and grass area for a swim or a run.

The walk. A 7.1 km loop, fully paved and flat the whole way, so it suits wheelchairs and prams as well as dogs. Rated easy, it takes most walkers around 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace, passing through John Knight Memorial Park, patches of eucalypt forest, and open lakeside parkland.

The rules. Dogs must stay on lead on the shared path and in the lakeside park, as set by the ACT Government (Transport Canberra and City Services). The exception is the designated off-leash beach and grass area at the Diddams Close end, where dogs can run and swim freely. Wherever leashed rules apply, keep dogs at least 10 metres from playgrounds, barbecues, and fireplaces, and carry your own bags even though bins are provided at intervals.

Water. Bubblers and water fountains are spaced along the trail for people, but the real drawcard for dogs is the lake itself. The off-leash beach at Diddams Close is the spot for a proper swim rather than the leashed sections of shoreline.

Getting there. Parking is available at Diddams Close, John Knight Memorial Park, and along the Western Foreshore, though the Diddams Close carpark fills fast on weekends, so the Western Foreshore or John Knight Park are safer bets then. ACTION buses run to Belconnen Town Centre, a short walk from the lake, for those without a car.

Nearby with the dogs. For a dedicated off-leash session beyond the beach, Lake Ginninderra Dog Park is close by. Afterwards, Cafe2617 is a handy stop for a coffee, or head to the Lighthouse Pub for something more substantial with lake views.

When to go. Weekday mornings or early afternoons are quieter; weekends and sunny periods bring out joggers, walkers, and families in numbers, especially near Diddams Close. This loop is good for seniors and anyone wanting a calm, flat walk, with a proper off-leash run available for the bigger runners at the western end.
