Hammerwood Green Reserve Dog Off Leash Area

Hammerwood Green Reserve is a neighbourhood-level reserve on Hammerwood Green in Beaconsfield, a short hop from Beaconsfield station on the Pakenham line. It runs as a dog off-leash area under Cardinia Shire rules, sharing the space with a children's playground and a basketball half-court. This is a local run-around spot, not a marquee destination park.

Off-leash status

Dogs can run free here under Cardinia Shire's off-leash rules, as long as they stay under effective voice or hand control and within your sight the whole time. The reserve is not fully fenced: it is open to the surrounding residential streets, so if recall is a work in progress, keep the lead handy. If your dog gets pushy with people or other dogs, the rules say it goes straight back on leash. Dogs also need to stay well clear of the playground area.

What's there

The off-leash space is a large grassed area, generous enough for a proper run or a game of fetch. There is no water tap confirmed, so bring your own water and a bowl, and no confirmed bin or bag dispenser, so carry waste bags and take them with you. The grass surface can turn boggy after rain, which is worth remembering through a Melbourne winter. The playground and half-court mean the reserve gets family traffic, so expect kids around the edges of the green.

Getting there and parking

The reserve sits off O'Neil Road on Hammerwood Green, and free street parking is available along the residential street frontage. Beaconsfield station is close by if you are walking in from the train. It is open around the clock, though daylight hours are obviously the practical window.

When to go

Late afternoons and weekends are the busy stretches, mostly families using the playground alongside the green. A weekday mid-morning visit is quieter, which helps if your dog is unsure around kids or crowds. After heavy rain, give it a day to dry out.

Close by with the dogs

If full containment matters, Beaconsfield Fenced Dog Park is the suburb's enclosed option, and Onyx Crescent Fenced Dog Park in Officer is a short drive east with a water tap at the gate. For coffee afterwards, daydreamers Cafe on the Old Princes Highway strip welcomes dogs. The Cardinia Aqueduct Trail up the road is a good leashed add-on walk.

Max: plenty of room to sprint, but no fence means my human actually has to trust my recall.
