Jane Gorry Park

Jane Gorry Park is a suburban park on Christopher Street in Augustine Heights that does double duty: a general community park with a playground, half-court basketball hoop and picnic tables, plus a fully fenced off-leash dog area tucked inside it. It is a solid local stop on a neighbourhood walk rather than a destination in its own right, but the shade and amenities make it a comfortable one.

The rules

Ipswich City Council requires effective voice control even inside the fenced area, and dogs go back on lead the moment they step outside it. Owners must stay in attendance with visual contact, and an aggressive dog has to be leashed and taken out straight away. Two practical notes: the fencing is only about waist height in places, so a jumper should not be treated as safely contained, and households can keep up to two dogs without a permit on blocks under 2,000 square metres.

Shade trees, picnic tables and benches, public toilets, a kids playground and walking paths loop the park. Bring your own water bowl and poo bags, as on-site taps and bag dispensers are not guaranteed to be stocked. The basketball hoop and open grass keep non-dog family members busy, which makes it an easy compromise park for mixed households.

Weekday mornings and midday on weekends are the quiet windows, while weekend mornings and weekday early evenings pull the most local traffic. That traffic is fine for a social dog and worth avoiding if yours prefers space, particularly with the lower fence line in mind.

The park sits at 4 Christopher Street, Augustine Heights, with the dog area accessed off Rush Drive. On-street parking is right outside, and local bus routes run along the nearby arterial roads with a short walk in from the closest stop.
