Cafe on South Bay

Cafe on South Bay is a neighbourhood breakfast cafe at Shop 1, 1 South Bay Drive in Varsity Lakes, sitting right by the lakefront on the Gold Coast's southern lakes precinct. Its whole logic is the walk: the paved path around Lake Orr passes close by, so the cafe works as the finish line for a lap of the lake with the dog rather than a destination on its own.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome at the undercover outdoor tables, and staff have a reputation for looking after pets, with water frequently brought out unprompted. The outdoor area is the place to be anyway, shaded and facing the water. Weekends pack out during the breakfast peak, so early arrivals get the best tables and the calmest dog-side experience.

The vibe

This is a locals' breakfast room, not a scene. The kitchen turns out a consistent brunch menu, with the Big Breakfast, the veggie breakfast with poached eggs and the steak sandwich the usual orders, alongside reliable Campos coffee. Service is friendly and quick, which matters when a wet dog is tied up beside you. Hours run 6am to 2:45pm weekdays and from 6:30am on weekends, closing early afternoon, so it is a breakfast and lunch spot only.

Getting there and parking

Street parking runs along South Bay Drive and the surrounding residential streets, generally easy on weekdays but tighter during the weekend breakfast rush. Varsity Lakes station is a short walk if you are coming by rail, and the lake path makes it an easy on-foot stop from most of the suburb.

Make a day of it

Frascott Park fenced dog park is the natural warm-up before coffee, and Robina Common covers you a suburb over. Later in the day, UE Bagels does a casual dog-friendly lunch, and the Palm Beach off-leash beach is a short drive east for a swim.
