Flutterbies Cottage Cafe

Flutterbies Cottage Cafe occupies a pair of historic buildings on Coolman Street in Tyalgum, a village in the Tweed caldera below Mount Warning. The cafe is known for its vintage tearoom and its generous outdoor space, and it is one of the more explicitly dog friendly venues in the Tweed hinterland: two whole zones are set aside for dogs rather than a token table.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the tree lined outdoor verandas and in the large rear garden eating areas, on a leash and within those designated outdoor zones. The vintage tearoom itself is off limits to dogs, so if you are set on dining inside among the antiques, this is not that kind of visit. In practice the garden is the better seat anyway: shade, space between tables and room for a dog to lie flat without becoming a trip hazard. Because the pet rules come from visitor-reported detail rather than a published policy, confirm the current arrangement if you are planning around it.

Worth knowing

Tyalgum is a destination in itself: a tiny heritage village with a music festival reputation, art galleries and a winding drive in from Murwillumbah or Uki. Plan the cafe stop as the middle of a hinterland loop rather than a quick coffee, and note the drive in is narrow and slow in places. Weekends draw the crowds; weekday mornings are calm and the garden is at its best.

Back towards town, River Street Park in Murwillumbah is a riverside stop for the dog, and the Murwillumbah Showground offers pet friendly camping if the loop becomes an overnighter, as does the Tweed River Motel for a room-based option.
