House of Gabriel

House of Gabriel is a high-set cottage cafe on the banks of the Tweed River at Tumbulgum, with a front veranda that looks across the water to Wollumbin (Mt Warning). It is a destination cafe, not a drive-through, and the veranda is exactly where you and the dog want to be.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas, the front veranda and the river-facing courtyard, but not inside the restaurant building. Keep your dog on a lead at all times; staff expect them settled and well-behaved around other diners, and the veranda is popular enough that space is shared. Water bowls are often provided, but bring your own just in case.

Worth knowing

The kitchen does cafe-style breakfast and lunch, with gourmet hot dogs, smokey chicken wings, nachos and home-made cakes, and the scones and sticky date pudding carry their own reputation. Wood-fired pizzas are the Friday night drawcard. Hours run 9am to 2pm Wednesday to Friday and 9am to 3pm on weekends, closed Monday and Tuesday.

Getting there and parking

The cafe is at 106 Riverside Drive, Tumbulgum. Free parking sits directly on Riverside Drive in front of the venue or in the nearby side streets, which makes arrival simple even on a weekend.

Close by with the dogs

A paved footpath runs along the river across from the restaurant for an easy on-lead stroll before or after, and Tumbulgum's riverbanks otherwise stay on-lead under Tweed Shire rules. For a proper off-leash run, the Corowa Park Dog Exercise Area at Chinderah is about ten minutes' drive, handy if you are crossing the bridge toward the coast.

Pepsi: book the earlier sitting and take the veranda corner. River breeze, mountain view, and a dog that sleeps the whole drive home.
