The AVID Coffee Lounge

The AVID Coffee Lounge occupies 82 Swann Road in Taringa, a leafy westside Brisbane suburb, and it is one of those cafes where the outdoor setup quietly does the work of a dog policy. Seating is largely alfresco and garden style, with greenery, benches and a small water feature, so there is room for a dog to settle properly rather than perch on a footpath edge.

Because the tables are spread through a garden rather than jammed along a street, larger dogs are easier to accommodate, but it still pays to ask for a corner table on arrival if your dog needs space.

This is a calm, green hideaway rather than a scene: locals bring laptops, the Merlo coffee gets good wraps, and there are toasties, mango smoothies and baked goods on the menu. It opens early, around 6am on weekdays and 6:30 to 7am on weekends, and winds up around midday, so it is strictly a breakfast and brunch play. Swann Road sits back from the Moggill Road strip, which keeps things quieter. Free street parking is generally available on the surrounding Taringa streets, and the suburb's train station is within walking distance if you are pairing the visit with a neighbourhood walk.

The leafy streets around Swann Road are pleasant on the lead before or after coffee. For an off-lead run nearby, Perrin Park Dog Recreation Area in Toowong is a short drive, and Scatter Bean on Moggill Road is the suburb's other dog-friendly coffee stop if you are doing a cafe crawl.
