Coffee warden

Coffee Warden is a small bayside cafe on Ward Street, on the Sandgate-Brighton border and a short roll from the foreshore. It is the kind of local spot where the morning dog-walking crowd is a fixture rather than a novelty: the umbrella-shaded street-side tables fill with locals fresh off the Sandgate foreshore, and the kitchen sends out big, homestyle breakfast plates.

Dogs at Coffee Warden

Dogs are welcome at the outdoor street-side tables under the umbrellas; the indoor room is for people only. Water bowls are regularly provided, and the staff have a friendly reputation with pets. Because the tables sit right beside foot traffic, keep your dog on a short lead tucked in against your seat. There is no need to book for a small outside table, but weekends after 8am thin out the options.

The vibe

Quiet, unpretentious and local. The all-day breakfast list is generous, with big servings of bacon and egg rolls, savoury mince and eggs benedict, plus milkshakes for the non-coffee crowd. Doors open at the unusually early hour of 5am, six days a week, closing at 1pm, which makes it a genuine first-stop for early walkers and shift workers alike.

Getting there and parking

The cafe sits on Ward Street with free street parking along the block and the surrounding residential streets. Sandgate station is close enough to walk from if you are arriving by train with the dog.

Close by with the dogs

The Sandgate Foreshore Park dog area is the obvious walk before coffee, and the fenced run at Curlew Park covers a proper off-lead session. The Wired Owl Coffee Co and 3 Blind Mice Cafe are the other Sandgate strip cafes that welcome dogs.
