Chubby Magpie Coffee Roasters

Chubby Magpie Coffee Roasters is a family-run roastery and coffee house at U2/71 Eyre Street, North Ward, a few blocks back from The Strand in Townsville. It opens at 5am and takes its coffee seriously, which makes it the first stop before a morning walk with the dog rather than an afterthought.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the covered outdoor seating area off Eyre Street, tucked away from the heavier rush of The Strand. The detail worth knowing: the kitchen makes a house Doggos Breakfast, a bacon-wrapped oat and egg frittata, so your dog gets its own order rather than just a pat on the head. Bring water of your own as well, because North Ward mornings heat up fast.

As a roastery, the coffee is the headline: roasted in house, beans to take home, and a reputation for being smooth rather than bitter. The breakfast menu covers the full plates, and there are gluten free options plus house-made ginger beer. Hours suit early risers, running to 1pm on weekdays and noon on Saturdays; it is closed Sundays.

Getting there and parking

Street parking is on Eyre Street and the surrounding North Ward streets, and it is an easy walk from The Strand. The early open makes it a natural pairing with a dawn walk before the North Queensland heat takes over.

Close by with the dogs

The Strand promenade is the main on-lead walk a few blocks away, and Pallarenda Dog Beach is the official off-leash beach further up the coast when your dog needs a real run.
